What is aromatherapy?

Get acquainted with essential oils, the 100% natural way to enhance health and wellbeing.

In today’s fast-paced, environmentally-challenged world, it’s no surprise the popularity of aromatherapy is at an all time high. For many, our lifestyles are a balancing act – we’re busy juggling work and family commitments, while trying to carve out social time and self-care. With so many balls in the air, it’s no surprise we’re reaching out for natural ways to reduce stress, and enhance our health and wellbeing, with a holistic approach to mind, body, and soul.

But to really understand the important role aromatherapy can play in your life, it’s important to understand what it is, where it came from, and where it’s going …

What is aromatherapy?

At its heart, aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, derived from plants and aromatics, for a diverse range of wellness, preventative, emotional, and physiological reasons. Oils are used either topically, aromatically, or internally, and can be blended to produce exquisite fragrances with different therapeutic benefits.

The origins of aromatherapy can be traced back over hundreds of years to a number of ancient civilisations who embraced the use of essential oils. The Chinese, Indians, Greeks, Egyptians and Romans held their oils in high regard, using them in cosmetics, perfumes, trade, as a flavouring for food, as well as for medicinal purposes.

The distilling of essential oils for medicine is documented from as early as the eleventh century when Avicenna – described as the ‘father of modern medicine’ – isolated aromatic oils using steam distillation. From there, the concept of aromatherapy was advanced by several European scientists and doctors in the early 1900’s, and during World War II a French surgeon, Jean Valnet, pioneered the modern medicinal use of essential oils when he used them in the treatment of wounded soldiers.

Today, aromatherapy is recognised around the world as an important natural therapy for a wide range of conditions and purposes. From pre and post-natal care to palliative care, menopause to massage, mood enhancement and medical conditions, to simply enjoying the luxurious sensory pleasure of aromatics … the demand for aromatherapy and essential oils is flourishing.

What is aromatherapy used for?

One of nature’s greatest gifts, essential oils’ properties are as unique and varied as the reasons people use them. For an idea of how aromatherapy can enrich your life, some common uses include:
